On April 17, 2026, Amazon added a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on top of every FBA fulfillment fee in the US. It's not a new fee category — it's a multiplier applied after the standard fulfillment fee is calculated. Amazon framed it as a response to persistent fuel and transportation cost increases. They called it temporary. You should plan as if it's permanent.
2026 rate and scope
| Program | Surcharge | Effective date | Applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| US FBA Standard | 3.5% | April 17, 2026 | All FBA fulfillment fees |
| Canada Remote Fulfillment | 3.5% | April 17, 2026 | All Remote Fulfillment with FBA fees |
| Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) | 3.5% | May 2, 2026 | All MCF fulfillment fees |
| Buy with Prime | 3.5% | May 2, 2026 | All Buy with Prime fulfillment fees |
How it's calculated
Simple: multiply your standard FBA fulfillment fee by 1.035.
totalFulfillmentFee = baseFulfillmentFee × 1.035
Small standard 4–6 oz: $3.29 base → $3.29 × 1.035 = $3.405
Large standard 8–12 oz: $4.20 base → $4.20 × 1.035 = $4.347
Large standard 1–1.25 lb: $5.04 base → $5.04 × 1.035 = $5.217
What it actually costs you per month
Monthly cost at different volumes (Beauty/HPC, Small Standard, avg $3.50 FBA fee)
These are incremental costs vs. what you were paying on April 16. They're in addition to the Jan 15 FBA fee increase (~$0.08/unit avg).
What most brands miss
Most brands updated their P&L models when Amazon announced the January 15 fulfillment fee increase. Almost none updated them again for April 17. The surcharge landed mid-Q2 and didn't come with the same announcement fanfare. If you're still running Q2 margin projections built before April 17, you're showing yourself money you don't have.
The other thing brands miss: the surcharge is applied to the MCF rate, which already went up $0.30/unit in 2026. If you're fulfilling off-Amazon orders through Amazon FBA (Shopify, TikTok Shop, etc.), you're now paying the higher MCF base rate plus 3.5%. The effective MCF cost increase since 2025 is 15–20% depending on size tier.
How to reduce your exposure
- Reprice if margin allows. The surcharge is a cost input — model it the same way you modeled the Jan 15 increase. If you haven't passed it through to pricing, your CM% has quietly declined since April 17.
- Reduce dimensional weight on Large Standard items. If you're in the 3–20 lb Large Standard bracket, every 4 oz you can shave off packaging reduces both the base fee and the 3.5% on top of it.
- Audit your MCF volume. If you're using FBA for off-Amazon fulfillment and the economics are marginal, re-run the numbers with the May 2 surcharge. Some categories tip toward 3PL at the new MCF rates.
- Watch for removal. Amazon has removed fuel surcharges before (briefly, in 2023). Track the fee update page quarterly.
Frequently asked questions
What is Amazon's fuel and logistics surcharge? ▾
A 3.5% surcharge added on top of every FBA fulfillment fee, effective April 17, 2026. Amazon describes it as a response to elevated fuel and transportation costs. It applies to US FBA, Canada Remote Fulfillment, MCF, and Buy with Prime.
When did the Amazon fuel surcharge start? ▾
April 17, 2026 for US FBA. Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) and Buy with Prime followed on May 2, 2026. Canada Remote Fulfillment also started April 17, 2026.
Is the fuel surcharge permanent? ▾
Amazon calls it 'temporary.' Every seller should model it as permanent. Amazon has a history of making temporary surcharges into standard fees — the 2022 fuel surcharge was also called temporary. Plan your pricing around the surcharge being here to stay.
How much does the fuel surcharge add per month? ▾
3.5% of your total monthly FBA fulfillment fees. At 10,000 units/month with an average $5.00 FBA fee, that's $50,000 in fulfillment fees × 3.5% = $1,750/month in additional cost. At 1,000 units it's $175/month. It compounds with every fee increase.
Does the fuel surcharge apply to storage fees? ▾
No. It applies only to FBA fulfillment fees — the per-unit pick, pack, and ship charge. Monthly storage, aged inventory, inbound placement, and returns processing fees are not subject to the surcharge.
Does the fuel surcharge apply to MCF orders? ▾
Yes, starting May 2, 2026. If you fulfill Shopify, TikTok Shop, or other off-Amazon orders through Amazon's Multi-Channel Fulfillment program, those units now also carry the 3.5% surcharge on top of the already-increased MCF rates.
